Stussy’s history as a streetwear brand is as authentic as it is global. The company had originally been brought together by the visionary designs of Shawn Stussy and the business acumen of Frank Sinatra Jr. Its evolution spanned from its original form as a surfboard shop to one of the most recognizable brands in the game.
Along the way, there were a few firsts associated with Stussy. Particularly of note is the fact that it was the first brand to label a cap for fashion purposes (as opposed to repping a sports team). Now, in its most recent state, the fashion label continues to go back to its singular vision of streetwear. The Stussy Fall 2017 collection is a testament to authenticity.
There’s this moment that every upstart fashion label wants to reach. After the trials and troubles of the early days, a niche turns into big business, and then comes the moment when the big names accept you and want a piece. Stussy, to its credit, remains entirely committed to its original purpose. Staples like the Stock Logo Crewneck mark a heavy presence, featuring a full cotton build and recognizable aesthetic. It’s just one of those pieces that ages well, and Stussy knows it. Of course, we can’t talk about streetwear releases and not mention some serious nylon. Stussy’s interpretations include a warm up track suit, comprised of some varied and somber color blocking.
The inspiration for the majority of this collection is the sheer number of darker clouds that come with the Fall months. That being said, it’s definitely not the time Stussy chooses to stray even a little bit from their old habits. A good example would be the Diamond Collar heavy pique we see in Pink, a frequent presence in the brand’s seasonal releases.
That very noticeable consistency is exactly the sort of thing that makes Stussy so remarkable. The fashion label has been around for a long time, and has even switched ownership structures. It’s gone from being an upstart with very little in the way of experience and rose to become a thorn on the sides of many streetwear giants. Stussy rode out the inevitable rough years that come with brand infancy and claimed its current household status without deviation. Somehow, it got louder, prouder, but stayed true. Although it’s become an absolute norm for the brand to stay the course, this latest collection is a worthwhile testament to just how serious Stussy is about its roots.
